Writing a screenplay: The Twelve Stages of a Hero’s Journey

A modern story or screenplay can be very complex and contain so many different elements it’s difficult to determine exactly how the hero got into the situation he currently finds himself in.  In this article we are going to break down the parts of a story, using The Matrix as an example, and explain the twelve stages used to put a story together so it has a smooth, logical flow from one stage to the next.  This format has been used time and time again in numerous stories, theatrical performances and screenplays and once you understand it you will see these stories in a different way and you will be able to clearly see the various stages of a story.  It’s important to remember that these stages are more of a guideline than a rigid structure.  You can mix them up to a degree, add or subtract a part and still have a successful story.
